Recommended Resources

One of the goals of Forthemultitude.org is to help connect the Christian community with useful resources that will educate the Church and help local churches and individuals be more effective in ministry. One of the primary ways of doing this is through books. Some of the resources shown below have been around for awhile, while others are brand new. Regardless of age, each of them contain essential information for anyone serving in cross-cultural ministry — short or long term.

Cultural Intelligence: Improving Your CQ to Engage Our Multicultural World

by David A. Livermore
Publisher: Baker, 2009 ISBN: 9780801035890

This engaging book seeks to tackle the challenges of cross-cultural interaction in the context of Christian ministry. Livermore, an expert in intercultural studies, urges his readers to “become more multicultural people so that we might better express love cross-culturally.” While most works on cross-cultural ministry seek to teach their readers about other cultures they may encounter, Livermore’s book contends that preparation for cross-cultural ministry depends on an inward investigation and transformation. This is what he calls developing one’s Cultural Intelligence quotient, and the book explores the knowledge, interpretations and behavior one must develop to heighten one’s CQ.

Giving Wisely: Killing with Kindness or Empowering Lasting Change?

by Jonathan Martin
Publisher: Last Chapter Press, 2008 ISBN: 9780981651408

Generosity. How does one be truly generous? Is it merely a matter of giving money? Is there a right way and wrong to be generous? Is it possible to kill someone or something with generosity? These are some of the hard questions that are discussed by Jonathan Martin his book entitled Giving Wisely? Killing with Kindness or Empowering Lasting Transformation? Bringing a wealth of experience, both as a ten year veteran Missionary in Asia and a Missions Pastor in Oregon, Martin takes a hard look at what it means to be truly generous. Dividing the topic into three sections, Martin examines the true nature of generosity, the foundational principles for Biblical generosity, and substantive examples of how these principles could be applied in real-world situations.
