Departing June 16th

Over the last 25 years the Church in Africa has been growing by leaps and bounds. Some localized areas have experienced triple digit growth for several years. It is exciting to see how God is working, yet the picture is not entirely positive. With the ever increasing numbers of new believers, new congregations with mature leaders are required to nurture these new born Christians. Unfortunately, the number of qualified leaders has not kept pace with the influx of new congregations. This is not a new problem. In fact, Kima International School of Theology (KIST) was founded to meet this need. For the last 13 years, KIST has turned out 300+ graduates who are no serving in positions throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Since our commissioning last June, the most challenging thing we have faced is fund raising. In the best of times, most missionaries experience some level of conflict with asking people for money. In the current climate, with the depressed economic situation, it becomes even more difficult. All of us, including our family, have experienced losses due the economic down turn. Some have lost homes. Some have lost jobs and almost everyone has lost money in the stock market. At times it can be discouraging. Yet as I read the Scriptures the morning, the Holy Spirit encouraged my heart with story from the Gospel of Matthew. One of the most exciting days of our lives occurred on June 25, 2008. During the last evening service of the 2008 North American Convention of the Church of God, our family was formally commissioned as missionaries to Kenya.
